Day 2 of reading.

Day 2 of reading.

I do a little research on the books I read. Actually just a little trivia about the book and the author. I find that Water for elephants was written during a NaNoWriMo. (National novel writing month) . That is exciting. NaNoWriMo produces a published, successful, likable and a saleable book. I also find that all Sara Gruen’s stories have animals and she is an animal activist , too. That is the example of how you can convert your love and passion into a vocation and I find it inspiring.

To come back to the story, our narrator Jacob, suddenly orphaned and clueless about his life, jumps onto a train which is actually a circus train. I love the idea of a person being able to do whatever he wishes to, start an adventure and abandon his entire prior life . I agree , that he doesn't do it by choice, but it is an adventure nevertheless.  On that note , I slept yesterday, thinking of circus thoughts. My eyes were tired, but brain was not.

The book was engrossing enough for me to finish today, without going to the ‘ Name of the wind’. I loved it while I was reading , but 30 minutes later, I find the ending a little too neat and contrived for my liking. Also, I don't like Marlena’s character very much, there is hardly any depth to her. The best character is that of Rosie, the elephant : intelligent, sassy, gin loving , polish speaking (understanding). Jacob is also good as a character . I will not presume that I can advise the author to improve on her creation but everybody need not be forced to live happily ever after . I cared more about the animals than the lovers and felt that Jacob’s bonding with the animals could have been depicted better.

So, that is that.

Tomorrow is a new day , a Sunday , a reading day… will keep posted about what I read ...

Reading goals :2018

Reading goals :2018

2017 was a resurrection of reader in me. I read total 90 books , mostly fiction. Most of that was fantasy and literary fiction. (I heard this apt description of literary fiction in a video yesterday : You have beautiful prose but may not have any plot, it maybe just 40 pages of description of  just a man walking in a nearby park !😊) I was also a compulsory buyer of books, buying more than reading.

This year I hope to discipline myself.I plan to buy less( not exceeding my monthly budget) , read more, read better and varied. I also plan to utilize the excellent library in my city.

So,broadly, my reading goals are : Read at least one book of the following

A literary fiction

A book that I have read halfway through and abandoned : I will give them at least a fair chance

A library book

A non fiction

A book from my non ebook collection

Hopefully, I will not read more than 6 books per month.

I also plan to cut short my book collection this year, I plan to get rid of all those books which I will never read or have read but not liked.

As a part of reading less I am planning to write more , I am planning to write on all books that I read.

What are your reading goals for 2018 ? Hope you all have a great reading year ahead...

Reading too much...

Finally December is here. As always, I like to go over the entire year through my diaries and note the most important events. This year, in addition to events, I am also going through my books, the books that I have bought and actually read. It has been easier this year ,as most of the books are ebooks. (Whatever paper books I have bought, I haven't even touched any of those.)

I bought my kindle in February. I was buying on an average 6-8 books, many free books and cheaper books which were on sale. But something happened in September which made these figures rise exponentially. In September, I discovered booktube !

There are several good channels on youtube ,which discuss books, there is something for everyone there. I discovered booktube and based on those recommendations I bought several books (I am embarrassed to reveal actual figure though, I have bought simply too many books in last 3 months!) I am happy that most of the books have been fantastic reads.

Booktube recommended reading has suddenly turned my reading tastes in completely opposite direction. I was totally into nonfiction a few months back, now I read only fiction. I have discovered several new authors and a new genre which I never thought I would enjoy .... science fiction/fantasy. (I always thought fantasy was for kids ...) I discovered some really fantastic adult fantasy books, set in some very intelligent and creative worlds.
Over the years, I thought I had lost capacity to read chunky books ,but I am regaining that slowly. My reading speed was always good ,but I used to succumb to temptations of social media very easily. Happily, now ,my books are more appealing to me than any other thing. I have been reading 10-12 books per month since September , which I think is very good...

Now, all is not hunky-dory. There are a few side effects, too. Apart from spending a lot of money over books, I feel ,I have withdrawn from the real world. I actually prefer reading to conversations. If I am at a particularly interesting point in the plot, I neglect everything else, especially boring housework (and exercise...) My work related reading has decreased considerably. I have lost interest in writing and music. I also feel eye fatigue very often.( I know, I am behaving like an extremist…)

I hope that this reading frenzy is just a temporary phase of my reading and everything will settle soon, hopefully this month.I was not aware of how crazily I was buying and reading ,till I looked through my diary today. Now that I have noticed,I plan to read less this month,(I finished the first book of the month yesterday, which is Robin Hobb’s 'Assassin’s apprentice', first book in a very long high fantasy series.I have started a new book today, Paul Auster's 'The NewYork Trilogy'.I will read this slowly over a week. I have heard ,that ,this is not an easy read,so it sounds perfect for me right now.)I have decided a budget and number of books that I am permitted to buy this month and I will strictly follow the rule. I will also read for only an hour or two daily.

I always thought that paradise means a place full of books. My idea of relaxation and vacation is reading without getting disturbed . But as in everything, balance is necessary.Too much of anything is detrimental to health, even books...

Why do I read ?

Why do I read ?

In the book ‘ Where I am  reading from ‘ Tim Parks asks himself , a series of questions...why do I read ? Why do I write ? What books do I like ? And why do I hate a book which my friend loved?…..so on and so forth….

Really , why do I read ? ....Probably to run away from unwanted thoughts ,questions ,stress …

To get entertained , to find healing , to find answers…..

I was a lazy child , and I suspect that I started reading ,probably to avoid running and playing....

But now I read to know myself . I want to know that my thoughts ,feelings and opinions are shared by somebody-anybody....

I want to have answers ,I want to know why some things happen,I want to know how to cope….

I also read because I want to learn, grow ,organize my thoughts.

I read because I want to write.

I read because I prefer solitude. Reading is a pastime of solitary people.Solitude and reading nurture each other….

Yes, books mean a lot to me and no events, or turns in my life have been able to replace it permanently…

Yes …..I am a reader !!!

Love : A poem !

Time stops !

Life is complete …..

….A perfect circle ….with you ….

You answer all questions….

Patiently……

Never angry , never irate…..

You console me when I am sad….

And dance with me….joyously ...when I do…..

When I lose my way , you are the North star ….

The original Guru …..

You taught me how to live….

And how to kill……

The despair and darkness that sometimes dwell in me ……

How to think , how to laugh…

and solve puzzles….

( Math and non-math…… )

How to flick a wand and how to ride a broom…..

Visit places , in my head…..

Himalayas , Swat , Mordor and Knockturn Alley…..

Have visited them all…..

The world worships slim and dainty….

But fatter you get , love you even more….

And when it’s over….

A part of me goes away...with you…

But a part of you ...lives in me…..

To make me more complete !!!

A book club...which may or may not start ...

I love to read and I am a fairly regular reader.Always reading about book clubs,I am really curious about how  a book club functions.A year back a few friends of mine decided to start one  but the it never started.Sad !!!!
Then whats-app arrived and along with work started occupying most peoples' waking time .... including me. Book club of mine was looking to remain in dreams only.
Then again a wild idea struck me.....why not a whatsapp book club ? All you have to do is read one book per month and write two paragraphs about it ....in whichever genre you like and in whichever language you are comfortable in...means either marathi or english.( I am sure none of us are hindi readers).
Well ....This is the month when we start .....Yes...these are still plans only on paper .....and I find that nobody may have started a book...except may be Ruchi ...bless her...
But here I am ....already finished three books...midway between the fourth and already eyeing a fifth one which V is reading  ....and my palms are itching to write ...so have decided to go ahead and simply write...
All my previous attempts of starting a blog have failed.... miserably. I write one or two posts and then decide that I am a terrible writer ( It may be still true,,,who knows ...But I have succeeded in ignoring this voice of my subconscious.. ) Nobody would read what I have written ( who cares now...The self help book I finished a few days back is shouting in my inner ear !!) and what if everyone laughs ???
So ... here I am....successfully suppressing all my negative thoughts and finally venturing to start a blog...Happy!!....-)
Now ...no negative thoughts allowed ...I write because I enjoy writing...and hopefully will write at least one post per month ,,,not too much too ask for...isn't it ?

And with this note ,,,I sign off today ..will come back soon ...writing about the book I read last week...
